Graham Short Addresses Students at Cambridge University
Graham Short recently addressed students at one of the
world's most prestigious educational establishments, Cambridge
University, on the subject of his micro-art.
Having been invited as a keynote speaker by
the Department of Art, Graham delivered a very personal talk
illustrated with images of his pieces, including The Lord's
Prayer on the Head of a Gold Pin and The Sharp Edge
('Nothing is Impossible' Engraved Along the Sharp Edge of a Razor
Blade).
During his career, Graham has engraved for
leading academic publisher the Cambridge University Press, whose
offices are just a stone's throw from the venue of the talk.
Graham's most recent Cambridge connection, though, is his
involvement with popular author and broadcaster Stephen Fry, a
Cambridge graduate who began his career in the University's famous
Footlights and who represented his college on University Challenge.
This Summer, Stephen donated his vintage fountain pen for engraving
by Graham. The resulting work, Fry's Delight - a
Stephen Fry quote engraved along the tiny band of the pen - has now
been donated by Graham and Stephen to the charity English PEN,
which campaigns for writers' rights, freedom of expression and
literacy.
"It was a great honour to be invited to
address students at Cambridge University," says Graham. "It's also
a wonderful opportunity to hopefully engage new, young audiences
with the art and craft of engraving."
From 4th November, Cambridge's
Artique Galleries will be showing a solo exhibition of Graham's
Writers' Collection, which debuted last month at the Clarendon
Gallery in London's Mayfair.
